About the Artist
Alma Nungarrayi Granites (1955-2017) was a Warlpiri woman from Yuendumu, North-West of Alice Springs on the fringes of the Tanami Desert. She married after finishing school, looking after her three children while her husband, Robin Japanangka Granites – a well known artist, was regularly travelling abroad.
Alma studied at Bachelor College and worked as an Assistant Teacher at Yuendumu school, where students were not only taught to read and write both English and Warlpiri but local elders would regularly attend classes to teach children important cultural and history lessons. This sparked Alma to dive deeper into cultural learning, and enrol in adult education classes learning a range of art, design and craft approaches.
Influenced by her growing cultural knowledge, Alma stopped working as a teaching assistant in 1987 and started painting at the arts centre. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s however that her fluid rhythmical style came to the fore as she gained the confidence to experiment with composition and painting techniques while remaining respectful to her Warlpiri culture. Her work often references the night sky and includes detailed cultural references to song lines and Jukurrpa dreaming stories.
Alma’s work is held in collections around the world, including the South Australian Museum, Holmes a Court Collection, Artbank Australia, the Burkhardt-Felder Museum – Switzerland, and the ARTCOL Collection, Seattle. Her most recent exhibition was “Mother, daughter, granddaughter: Three generations of Yuendumu Artists” in 2009 at Kingfisher Gallery in Perth. Her family members continue to paint their culture at Warlukurlangu Artists.
