Australian cold pressed Tamanu Oil
Wild harvested in the Northern Territory from the topical evergreen Tamanu tree, Tamanu oil is an ultra-hydrating multi-use oil that is equally at home in the cosmetics bag and first aid cabinet.
Tamanu oil has been used for centuries in tropical south-east Asia and the Pacific. It’s the hottest beauty product in Indonesia at the moment, has been prized as a skin and hair elixir across Polynesia for centuries, is essential in Banglideshi wedding ceremonies, and is now being snapped up as a key ingredient in natural skin care serums by luxury European beauty brands.
Tamanu oil is truly a gift from nature, it:
- Has high levels of antioxidants and omega fatty acids
- Promotes collagen and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production – essential for bone and skin regeneration.
- Is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal (an excellent natural remedy for athlete’s foot)
- Is an effective anti-inflammatory (it provides instant relief from itchy bites!)
- Has been clinically proven to support wound healing (refer references below)
Sometimes called beauty leaf oil or calophyllum seed oil, after Tamanu’s scientific name, Tamanu oil is viscous (quite a thick oil) with a herby, earthy scent and a yellow colour with a hint of green to it. It is listed as an active cosmetic ingredient by the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI).
Common uses include:
- Facial moisturiser or serum
- Relief from itchy bites or inflammation, including arthritis
- Supports skin regeneration, for example scars, minor burns, sunburn, wounds or acne.
- Intensive moisture treatment for very dry skin, such as elbows and heels, and assists with treatment of psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis and rosacea
- A natural treatment for athlete’s foot and fungal nail conditions and promotes healthy nail growth
- As a soothing massage oil – try a foot massage with Tamanu oil at the end of the day
- It is also used by wildlife carers in the NT to support healing of burns and wounds in rescue animals!
Tamanu oil is easily absorbed by your skin, and blends effortlessly with other oils, such as argan, jojoba, or rosehip. You can even add your favourite essential oils to make your own facial serum. Sandalwood and vetiver work very well.
Northern Tamanu Oil is the only 100% Australian Tamanu oil available. Unlike Tamanu oil from overseas, where oil from numerous producers are blended resulting in batches of variable quality, this single-origin, small crop wild harvested Tamanu oil is a consistent quality year in, year out. Darwin’s climate enables Tamanu trees to fruit and flower twice a year (not possible just a touch further north or south) resulting in a consistently high-quality oil you can rely upon.
50ml bottle contains 100% pure cold pressed Australian Tamanu oil – it is not blended or diluted in any way. Northern Tamanu Oil is ethically and sustainably sourced in Darwin, NT. Wild harvested and ethically and sustainably processed in the Northern Territory, Northern Tamanu Oil is 100% natural, vegan friendly and palm oil free. Not tested on animals
About the Tamanu Tree
The Tamanu tree (Calophyllum inophyllum) is found across Africa, Asia, Indonesia and Polynesia. Its buoyant seeds (lined with a natural cork) floated across the Arafura to northern Australia, where they are well established across the Northern Territory coastline.
Also known as the beauty leaf tree or mast wood tree, Tamanu is prized for its excellent timber as well as its oil. Tamanu trees can grow to 20 metres tall, with large bright green waxy leaves, lovely fragrant white flowers and the distinctive ball fruit, which contains the prized seed.
Darwin is ideally situated to produce consistently high quality Tamanu oil, as the climate means that Tamanu trees fruit and flower twice a year – providing a 6-monthly harvest of Tamanu seeds of a consistent quality. Fruit is collected after it falls to the ground then sun dried for two months. The seeds are then cracked, the hard outer protective shell and cork layer are removed, and the inner kernels are cold pressed to produce this wonderfully potent and nourishing oil with a warming earthy scent.
Tamanu oil is for external use only – do not ingest and keep away from eyes and open wounds.
Tamanu oil is a tree nut, so do not use if you have a sensitivity to tree nuts. We recommend patch testing first. If you have any reaction to Tamanu oil please stop using it and see your GP right away.

Firstly I love the smell, it is kind of herby. Can't really describe it exactly, a hint of celery seed sort of. It goes on easily, soaks in well, and makes my skin feel really nice.
I've been using this oil on myself and my kids for insect bites and itchy skin and it provides instant relief. It also has a nice 'woody' scent which is much more pleasant than other chemical based creams. I definitely recommend it.
