About the Artist

Judy Napangardi Watson (1925–2016) was a senior Walpiri painter based in Yuendumu, North West of Alice Springs, painting with the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. A mother of ten, Judy grew up in a very traditional way and was known for her formidable energy and love of colour.

Judy started painting in her late 50s, taught by her sister Maggie Napangardi Watson, already a celebrated artist, but quickly developed her own style.

In the 1980s, together with her sister and other senior women painters, Judy began to boldly experiment with colour and challenge men’s dominance of acrylic painting in the Central Desert – mixing new colours and developing a distinctive style of high contrast colours and heavily textured paint with a ‘dragged dot’ style.

Known for her life-affirming bold palettes, Judy’s work references her ancestral country at Mina Mina, near the border of the Tanami and Gibson deserts and women’s dreamings associated with her country.

Her work is held in collections around the world, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Gordon Darling Foundation, Flinders University Art Museum, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, South Australian Museum, Aboriginal Art Museum, Utrecht, Netherlands, and the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, University of Virginia.
