About the Artist

Skin name:Ngwarraye

Alana has painted her country after rain where the ground may seem dry but the flowers and trees are green and growing strong. Her layered landscape shows the trees and grasses of Alyawarr, Central Australia between Alice Springs and the Queensland border.

Alana comes from an artistic family, and has painted for many years, initially learning from her mother, Edie Holmes, a well-known artist of Ampilatwatja, and with her sister Joyreen also a well know painter. A mother of four, Alana’s time is precious, however she notes “I paint because I enjoy painting… We still paint and talk together in a family group with our kids.”

Alana has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, including shows in Monaco, London and Paris.

About the Arts Centre
The Artists of Ampilatwatja community was established in 1999. Ampilatwatja is a small remote community between Alice Springs and the Queensland border. As a community, artists have made a conscious decision not to paint their ‘altyerr’ dreaming stories but instead focus on painting their country where those stories sit.  Most of the Ampilatwatja artists paint strong bush medicine, demonstrating their ongoing deep connection to country and acknowledging that every plant and animal has a vital role to play within the ecological system.  As is appropriate, paintings often depict both inside stories, for the culturally initiated, and outside stories – which impart a small amount of knowledge to the uninitiated.

Royalties from this product directly benefit the artist’s family and community.

Please note that artwork placement does vary slightly and each tote will be unique.
